Dirty Dancing musical opens next year


The cult movie classic-turned-theater hit Dirty Dancing will make its US premiere next year in Chicago.The musical, officially called Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage, will open Sept 2, 2008, at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre, officials said.Additional national tour dates and casting will be announced later.A stage version of the 1987 movie, which continues to have fans repeating the iconic line: "Nobody puts Baby in a corner," opened in Australia in 2004. Since then, the show has sold out performances in London's West End and Hamburg, Germany.The coming-of-age movie is set at a mountain resort and tells the love story of the ambitious-yet-sheltered Frances "Baby" Houseman, who falls in love with Johnny Castle, the camp's working-class dance instructor. Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze portrayed the roles in the movie.On stage, the US production will be directed by James Powell and choreographed by Kate Champion. The duo staged the London performance and are developing a Toronto production that will open in November."We hope that American audiences will be as eager to see the show as audiences throughout the rest of the world have been," Executive Producer Kevin Jacobsen said in a statement.
